What size tank should I get for 4 common goldfish?
Okay, so I dont want to spend alot of money on a super big tank but I want to provide my goldfish with a suitable tank. Also, tell me the average price for a tank that size for petsmart or walmart or somewhere like that.
Sadly, goldfish produce a lot more waste than other fish, and to keep the water quality acceptable you need quite a large tank. For fancy goldfish, 20 gallons with a filter for 40 gallons is recommended, and add 10 gallons for each additional fancy goldfish. For a common goldfish, lots of people recommend 55 gallons or more (although I have my doubts about that), so you would need a ridiculously large tank for four of them. Because they require such huge tanks, I only keep goldfish in my ponds.
I do know you can get 20 gallon aquarium from Petsmart that comes with a full hood and light for $60 and you could add a filter to that. You could probably assemble your own for much less.
A fish with low demands is the betta fish. They are absolutely gorgeous (assuming you get a nice one, not the crappy stock you can get at Petsmart), hardy, and undemanding. You can keep a single male (or female) betta in a 2.5-5 gallon tank with heater and filter. With warm water and enough space, he will be incredibly active.
