Should I cut the purple flower of my banana tree?
Hi,
I have a tree with a bunch of bananas on it. The weight from the flower is pulling the branch down. Should I cut it off? I had another bunch of bananas, the branch broke they were on. I believe it was from the heavy purple flower. What should I do, so this bunch of bananas won’t fall?

Congratulations on your bountiful banana crop. Since the flower is no longer setting fruit you should remove it. As ranger said; there are many recipes to use the flower for food. I have had some fried banana blossom prepared by a woman from Malaysia that was excellent. She cut the blossom into 1/2 inch thick rings, battered them and fried them, then coated them with a light honey glaze. Very tasty, indeed. If you are concerned about the stalk breaking under the weight of the bananas with the blossom removed you can support it with a 2X4 until they ripen.
