What’s it like living in Paris, especially if you moved there from another country?
I’m irish and i would really like to live in paris after college,i’m doing a degree in French as part of college. i’m also looking at living in lyon but paris would be my first preference.i won’t move there until i have job offers and i will be spending a semester studying there so i can scope it out as such.i don’t have huge romantic notions about paris, so i’m not going into it with rose tinted glasses like a lot of people might, i know every city and country has it’s social problems and i know i will more than likely have some teething problems but i am an extremely adaptable person.years of planning and research will go into this so i reiterate i’m not throwing myself into the deep end.
so i would like to ask some parisians, or some people that moved there from another country as sometimes you appreciate places more if they are alien to what you grew up in, what it’s like to live there.?
i know it’s expensive but i live in ireland so i know what expensive is 
If you are alone and have no contacts, it is extremely lonely. Two of my children moved to Paris, with good degrees from esteemed British universities, and they found, although they spoke immaculate French with no accent as they had had French grand-parents, that Parisian society was a closed box. Yes, they made friends with colleagues who opened their doors after a while but it was a slow process. Finding decent accommodation was both difficult and very dear, and they had to settle for suburbia like Rosny- sous-bois or Saint-Dennis and commute daily to their jobs.
In the end living there is very much like living anywhere: they were too tired at the week-end to go and take advantage of the cultural opportunities in central Paris and if anything wanted to escape outwards into fresh air and countryside.
Lyon is much more open and offers a more laid back existence. It is a brilliant city in every respect.
The problem is that with a degree in French you are not offering anything exceptional unless your other subject is unusual or technical. There are thousands of young French graduates or people with particular skills that are unemployed, desperately seeking work, or working in dead end jobs that they loathe to make ends meet. Added to which many people are being laid off at the moment or find themselves transferred to backwaters where offices are cheaper than in Paris. My daughter’s office in Paris was closed and she found herself transferred to a building in a down-at-heel town where private accommodation was at a premium, and she was not the only one: the same happened to several of the friends she made outside her work context, who found themselves in Maubeuge or Longwy instead of Paris. In these times of unemployment, you do not refuse a transfer as the alternative is even more dire.
I know that the Irish bubble has burst and life Ireland has become extremely expensive , but exactly the same thing has happened in France and the cost of living has become eye watering.
Since you are going to spend a semester there you will be able to judge for yourself and look at prospective jobs in your discipline whilst you are on the spot, or even make contacts there for when you have finished your degree.
