18 mos and not walking yet?
My friend’s lilttle boy is 18 mos old, and is not walking yet– any similar experience out there? There aren’t any obvious physical reasons, he’s healthy, has had his checkups, is not overweight, just lean and tall, and crawls very fast. He has an older sibling 3 years apart. Any suggestions?
Is he at least standing? Kids should be standing by 12 mos, and walking between 12-17, but of course every child is different so there is a bit of wiggle room. Still, I have seen too many kids where the pediatrician has taken the “wait and see” approach, which is frustrating because this is the time you want to be in there to help develop those skills. Is mom concerned? Therapy services (usually free) are available through early intervention, which serves kids from birth to three years of age. If she is concerned, she might want to set up an evaluation. If he is not walking by 20 mos, he definitely needs to be referred.
