How can I find my child’s learning style to be able to choose the right preschool for him?
My son is 2 1/2, and we are trying to decide between play-based, structured or Montessori preschools. He has always been very active, athletic, doesn’t sit still very long, loves to run around and play with balls, is into everything… great motor skills, but his language and cognitive skills are a bit behind. How does all of this translate to what he needs? Does he need an environment that mimics this, or does he need the structure to make up for what he doesn’t get? Or a mix of both? So far, he has not been enrolled in any other programs (just Gymboree, music classes and the like) so this will be his first real school/social experience. I don’t know exactly what will be the best for him. Any advice/suggestions?
I would go suggest a mix of both play-based and structure. All daycare have to have circle time which is where he will work on colors letter ect. They don’t last for long but most have the children sit still long enough to get some education. He will also either route have lots of books read to him which will increase his vocabulary. At that age he will have alot of free time to play but that little bit of it circle time will help him. A daycare that is too structed will not work well since he is so active. Plus being around other children will help teach him how to share, play nice, and help get his vocabulary up. The set schedule at daycares will be a nice structure for him as well.
