What is the best time to potty train and move from a crib to a big girl bed?
Daughter is 2 and we are planning on having another(next year) but want her out of diapers and in a big girl bed.
Don’t do them at the same time- it is too much change all at once! I’d start with the bed (because likely she’ll have to get out of it in the middle of the night to go potty!). We got my 14 month old son a car bed and we really pumped it up huge. We found it on craigslist- there are lots of awesome girl beds too (canopy, princesses, etc.) We had him show it to everyone who came over- he was so excited about it. We put his regular blankets and his stuffed bunny in it. My husband took down the crib and moved it out of the room the same day. The first night we took him outside and let him run and play on our playground and totally wore him out. We put him in it, read books, sang songs, and I shut off the lights and layed in bed with him and rubbed his back for a little while, then I kissed him, told him good night and shut the door. I checked in 15 minutes later and he was fast asleep. He is almost 1 1/2 now, and he still sleeps fine in it. I don’t put him under the covers. I just let him lay on top of the comforter (which he picked out- with sports balls on it) and tuck him in with a blanket.
As for potty training, I think you should do it soon- maybe within 2-6 months after the new bed. I think potty prizes are a great idea. Put a fishbowl full of little party favor type presents or stickers in the bathroom. Don’t mention anything about them or potty training until your daughter asks about it. Then just say nonchalantly- Oh, those are potty prizes. When you go on the potty you can have one, and then just leave the bathroom. Trust me, your daughter will be begging you to use the potty and that is most of the battle! We have our 2nd on the way, so you are definately smart to plan ahead! That’s actually why we put our little guy in a big bed. Good luck!
