If I dont plan on doing anything fancy, could I trim my poodle’s fur myself?
Well, I dont have a poodle yet. But I want one and the high maintenence fur is the only thing holding my mom back. Do you have to take a poodle to the groomer or can you just trim the fur yourself?
You can, but it’s not as easy as it sounds. I have 4 standard poodles, and my husband grooms our dogs. First, you have to be sure your poodle is trained to accept the grooming process well—- since you will be using sharp implements around tender parts of their flesh. This *should* begin with the breeder. Our pups had been groomed/clipped twice by the breeder before we got them. After that, it takes working them weekly so that they are comfortable with the process. Your puppy must be brushed daily for at least the first 2 years to prevent knotting. If you let your poodle get knotted, you MUST take him/her to the groomer- this is not a situation you should handle yourself.
You would also be spending around $250-$300 for the right equipment.
If you do decide to groom yourself, and you feel confident you can do it, I would suggest finding a poodle owner in your area that would be willing to work with you, and teach you the ropes. My husband learned first from a pet owner, then sought help from several professional poodle handlers/breeders. Now, he knows more about grooming a poodle than most groomers!
