Is a septic tank “dye test” accurate/thorough enough to have it done?
Or should we get an inspection where they look inside, etc.? We are looking at buying this home, and there is no info in the county as it is older, and grandfathered in. Also, if you know the approx cost of a “look inside” inspection, that would be most welcome. Thanks!
A dye test only tell you if effluent is “leaking”. A full inspection is the only route. The cost of a new system (depending on your location) can cost 10,000- 30,000 and more. The fact that the county you spoke to uses terms like “grandfathered in” tells me that the higher side of the estimate is most likely. YOU NEED TO GET AN INSPECTION THAT EXAMINES (BY DIGGING, PROBING AND PIPE CAMERA etc) I hope I said that loud enough. The inspection I would do in my area runs between 1200- 2500 depending on what we find when we open the system components. Good luck : )
