Am I supposed to cut the vents free on my new double vent jacket or leave them sewn shut?
I know you are supposed to cut off the little label on the sleeves and leave the outside pockets sewn shut but what about the vents? Doesn’t sewing them shut defeat the whole purpose of having them in the first place?
The pockets and the vents are sewn shut during contruction to make sewing and pressing easier. They aren’t meant to stay sewn shut. They are sewn with white cotton basting thread with loose hand stitches or long machine stitches. Any of these long stitches -wherever they are -may be cut out. You should be able to simply pull the thread out and the vents will open up. You can also safely open up any pockets in the outside hip area of the jacket.
