If you have crustaceans (crabs, crayfish, shrimp) in an aquarium, how do you give them land?
Honestly I’m just totally curious on this one. Regardless of aquarium size can you tell me a good way to do this. My idea would be like a ramp at the top of the aquarium clipped on to the side that they can swim up to then climb out. I’m open to anything though even traditional substrate modeling.
Bonus question, do you think they live longer if you give them a way out? I’ve kept crustaceans before and found them to be somewhat sensitive and hard to keep alive for over a year.
Crabs get stressed out if they don’t have land to go onto. The best advice I usually hear is to get a bag of substrate. Make the substrate rise slightly higher until it is at a spot where it is above water.
I think your idea of making a ramp from one tank to another is interesting, but there are a couple things to consider. Crabs only need to be an inch or two from the the lip of the tank to climb out, so make sure you either have a secure lid or no way for them to climb up, because they will escape if they find a way. Crabs will eat smaller, slower fish. Fiddler crabs are fairly peaceful, but they are territorial and will kill fish if they can’t butt out.
