Why do people believe babies cost a fortune to raise?
Breast milk is free
Resale shops are inexpensive.
Genetic brand diapers cost about 50% less than name brand, and clothe diapers are even cheaper just cost the most upfront.
There is affordable housing if you look, and if the other parent wants to play a big role in the baby’s life you can work opposite shifts and save on daycare cost.
People at church or that have kids a year older than yours will give you their hand me downs.
It all comes down to income and budgets if you really think about it.
Why do so many people think that babies cost an arm and a leg to raise?
Because, in our consumerist society, they have bought into the Advertising Industry’s message and want to buy, buy, buy…babies need love, they need cuddles and they need food and shelter. Their little butts can be covered by jeans that don’t actually say Gucci on them and they don’t care.
Living frugally doesn’t necessarily mean that you are poor; it simply means that your priorities are on the people inside the designer duds and not on the labels on what they own.
I have wondered this question many times and believe that this message has added to the concept that if you cannot provide the expensive materialistic things for children that their development will be somehow stunted. What Rot! Children still like to play with the boxes that their expensive Christmas toys come in. Imaginations are never being allowed to develop since we have regimented our little ones with classes, schools, practices and never allow them to play outside with their friends.
I would prefer that my children value something other than the labels on their clothing, the toys they play with and the gadgets that they can buy. I wanted my children to place value on what matters the most like family and friends.
