immigrating to canada! need info.?
My husband had applied for immigration 4 yrs back and now he would be getting a call anytime from the embassy. Mostly in six months time we would be migrating to Canada-Toronto. I have a 8 month old daughter and I am extremely tensed how everything would go as it would be a new start for me and my husband there. We both plan to work there. I have so many questions in mind though and require good advise from you all.. house? weather? do jobs pay well? will i be able to work by keeping my baby at a child care center? neighbors? r people helpful? what kinda clothes should i carry for us and for the baby? I have a pram, would it be advisable to take it with us? which part of Toronto is family oriented with school, medical and shopping malls close by?
If you can answer even few of these questions it would be a great help.
Your questions and concens are well-founded. It appears that there is no single clearing house for quetion sof your nature. As a Canadian (and American), I will attempt to help you–
Housing: –is expensive. Whether you rent or purchase, housing in all of Canada’s major cities is expensive. For the 3 of you, requiring at least a 2 bedroom place in (I presume) Toronto), you should budget at least $1000 per month, and 35% beyond that for utilities, cable tv, internet connection, garbage, air conditioning (due to extreme summertime humidity) water, trash, etc.
A reasonable 3 +2 house will cost you at least $400,000 in Toronto, Vancouver, and other major cities.
Weather–unfortunately; it is predominantly cold in Canada. Last week, there was a tv announcement that said that 90% ofCanada was under snowbound and sub-freezing temperatures. The only places hwere winter is sometimes modulated is the Lower Mainland area of British Columbia–but that is where everyone else wants to live as well. Spring will arrive in most places by mid-to-late April. Summer temps can be quite pleasant, but again, the humidity is quite stifling in Toronto and southern Ontario.
Don’t bring your pram with you–you can more easily find a replacement at garage sales or through Craigslist.org, or Kajiji.com.
People are by and large friendly, although you will have to usually make the initial effort.
As for clothes for you and your baby. You would likely do better to buy what you need once you are in Canada–either new, or through garage sales, or other sources…just so your styles are more in keeping with Canadian standards. Canadian fashions are somewhat behind British styles, and definitely more conservative. Bring baby’s clothes with you, however. No-one would ever comment on their fashionability, one way or another. They may turn out to be a topic for discussion.
You will find all shops, schoools, etc. conveneinet to your needs no matter where you end up living.
As for medical services, however, since medical care is 100% subsidized, you will likely find most doctors have a full patient list, so you may have to scramble to pre-arrange a family MD for your needs—prior to your need for that. And do start to arrange your elegibility for medical coverage (called ‘OHIP’) as soon as you arrive, so that your exposure is minimized.
