Baby head size vs clothing sizes…?
At my daughter’s six week check up they said her head measured in the 25th percentile… which seems small… yet her head barely fits through a lot of clothes. When I brought her home from the hospital she couldn’t wear any newborn size tops other than onesies because her head didn’t fit through.
Now at 6 weeks she is having that problem with her 0-3 month size. Things like sweaters, even though they have the buttons on the side to make the head hole bigger, just don’t fit over her head. It is all brands. The cheap stuff from Walmart has the same problem as the $30 sweaters from Gymboree, etc.
So I guess my question is, if my daughter’s head measures in the 25th percentile, what clothes do children with bigger heads wear? It is winter, babies need sweaters and other warm shirts to wear… They assured me that the nurse who measured her head is very good and accurate. I’m so puzzled by this…
The real way of checking if the clothes fit is if they are tight around the baby’s neck. You need to stretch the baby clothes before putting it over her head. Most knits (cotton, wools, even polyester fleece) will stretch.
Insert your hands into the the neck of the shirt and stretch so as to make the hole bigger (all around). Place the back of the shirt hole under your baby’s head, and gently pull over her face (take care not to scrape the nose).
Carters and others also make good buttoned sleep n plays, but I suspect your problem will be solved if you stretch the clothes.
I have a boy with a 25% percentile head circumference (his head is pointy so measures less) and he’s never had a problem. Besides, at this age, percentiles are useless (less than 0.25 cm differences).
