Baby Necessities?? How many and what do you *really* need?
I just had my shower and want to go through all the things….theres a lot of certain things, some things I think I need but didn’t get….
As far as big things I’m okay, I have what I need and know the few things I still need….
But, how many is what I want to know?!?! How many blankets, burp clothes, outfits, onsies, socks, burp clothes? How many do you think are enough?
thanks ahead of time!!!
Don’t take the tags off of all the clothes and wash them, wait until you need them. You only need some onesies and footed pajama suits at first. That’s the most comfortable thing for your baby. Try to have one package of the newborn onsies that snap at the side, not between the legs, until the umbilical cord is gone.
Oh, and you don’t need to wash baby’s clothes in special baby soap, but you should use one free of dyes and fragrance. Not only can these irritate your baby’s skin, they also add harmful checicals. Consider trying a natural soap. By all means, don’t use dryer sheets for baby’s clothes or bedding. Too many chemicals for a baby’s skin and lungs.
Whatever clothes you get, use them. Don’t save a cute outfit for special occasions, as babies grow out of outfits so quickly.
I never really used baby socks. I just put mine in footed outfits until they were older. Your baby should wear one layer more than you’re wearing, so that’s a onesie and a footed outfit for regular days. Don’t overheat your baby with too many layers and blankets, that’s one risk for sids.
You know, you’ll need several thin blankets for swaddling in the first month, and burpcloths are great if they’re big enough. You’ll stop using so many after the first few months, but it would be great to have four to six of each if you can. More is better in the first month, but then you just don’t need so many.
By the way, If your baby spits up a lot, a whole lot, or arches its back and cries, check with the doctor immediately to see if it has reflux. We used 10 bibs and burp cloths a day, but it turned out she had reflux. Simple medicine can fix it, so don’t let anyone tell you that some babies just have colic. That’s a cop out.
As for clothes, you need to plan for at least one outfit per day, maybe two or three. So figure out how often you want to do laundry. Again, I just love the footed pajamas and my kids would wear one outfit for 24 hours before I changed them at bathtime. Who wouldn’t want to hang out in their pjs all day?
One last plug. If you’re going to try breastfeeding, please get some lanolin cream like Lansinoh. Apply it all the time. Before each nursing session, after, before a shower, whenever. It’s perfectly safe for baby. If you take it to the hospital with you and use it regularly, you won’t suffer cracked nipples. (And if your nipples do get cracked, red or really painful, you may have a thrush infection that can be treated.)
Good luck to you! Congratulations!!
