10 More Quick Tips on Buying Baby Clothes
Old or new, borrowed or blue?
Just like many aspects of having a new baby, it is amazing how much confusion and consternation just choosing your wee one’s baby clothes can cause! Will they be too hot or cold? Will the clothes restrict their breathing? How will you get their nappy off, and will you have to undress them completely to do so? Will they be itchy? Baby clothes are a relatively simple subject, but you do need to develop a knack for buying them. Today we start helping you do so, with 15 quick tips for buying baby clothes.
1. Buy the right size
Yes, babies do grow exceptionally quickly compared to adults … but buying your baby clothes two sizes too large isn’t necessarily ‘good value’! By the time they look good and fit well on your baby, they’re usually worn out and very faded. It’s better policy to simply buy the right size, but not to have excessive numbers of baby clothes.
2. Sizing by weight
Most Australian baby clothes are sized starting at 00000 (5-O), then 4-o, 3-o, 2-O and just zero, then moving up to 1. In other sizing systems, use your baby’s weight as a guide rather than their height – it’s more accurate.
3. To outfit, or not to outfit?
Outfits are absolutely gorgeous. However, unless you’re a domestic goddess who always managed to have your clothes laundered, dried and folded every 3 days, you’ll probably find that you have one part of an outfit, but not the other. If you want to buy baby clothes in ‘outfits’, choose ones with interchangeable looks and patterns for this reason.
4. Don’t buy too much
You’ll find that just about everybody choose baby clothes as a gift for new parents, so don’t buy as many as you think you’ll need! You’ve got plenty of time to stock up later if necessary.
5. Mittens
These can be handy for babies born in winter that tend to scratch their faces in their sleep. However, some babies wake up when they can’t suck their fingers…
6. Shoes
Your baby doesn’t need anything more than thick socks or booties to keep their feet warm initially. You can buy shoes for warmth from around 4 months, but make sure that babies learning to walk have soft-soled shoes to help with development of balance.
7. Appliques
Be aware of appliqués on both little girls and boys baby clothes – if they aren’t securely fastened they can become a choking hazard. Check them every time the baby clothes are washed.
8. Seams
Baby clothes’ seams that are especially itchy or stiff might annoy your baby … causing more crying. Given that you probably have a lifetime supply of crying by now, it pays to check seams!
9. Lace, ruffles and wool
All of these items on baby clothes can end up itching your child, causing much the same effect as the stiff seams do. Keep your child’s clothes soft and simple, at least til they can communicate when something is bothering them.
10. Neck fasteners
Most babies have a head that is disproportionately large – so neck fasteners on baby clothes are a godsend to help combat screaming matches at dressing time!
