My baby is massive. Could there be something wrong?
He’s 8.5 months old and 31 pounds as of a week ago. Long too so not just totally fat. He is wearing 2T clothes and is starting to outgrow his size 4 diapers…my wife is starting to have trouble carrying him. He can’t fit in his car seat anymore and he wants to crawl but can’t due to being so huge. He is breastfed and eats occasional avocado or peas but nothing else really. I looked at percentiles and he is totally off the charts! Can this be an indicator of a problem?
His last checkup was at 6 months and he was in the 95 percentile. Now at 31 pounds he would be in the 95 percentile if he was 1.5 years old. His next checkup is still 6 weeks away.
What did the pediatrician say when you went for his regular check-ups? Make another appointment and ask him/her your concern.
Edit: I see. But, if it concerns you a lot and the number is starting to look strange, then make the appointment now. You’re his parents and he needs you to speak up for him. I’m sure the pediatritian will understand. He is growing a little too fast to wait for another 6 weeks, don’t you think? In any case, I included two related articles on your concern. Both talk about how it’s ok to have a bigger breast-fed baby. There’s another one that talks about slow gain rates that says it’s the curve pattern that matters, not the actual weight. I think the theory may apply to rapid weight gain as well. Observe your child. If his growth curve is deviating from a certain natural growth pattern, then make that appointment right away. Graph it and see.
