Need help with knitting a baby cap…?
I’m knitting a baby cap for a baby shower. I’m using size 8 double-pointed needles. I cast on 40 stitches, 10 on each needle, and I’m doing 1×1 rib for about half an inch, then I’m going to do stockinette stitch for the rest. Then at the very top I’m going to pull a piece of yarn through all the stitches to gather it so it’s closed.
But what I need help with is decreasing to kind of taper it to the top of the hat so I only have a few stitches when I gather it. How do you think I should decrease so it’s even all around and there aren’t puckery parts on the cap?

Start your decreases with k6, k2tog, around from the round marker. Knit a row even. Next decrease row, k5, k2tog round, k one row even. continue alternating a decrease round with one less stitch between the decreases and one row even until you are down to 5 stitches (if my quickie math is correct, should be 4 or 5). If it’s 5 stitches you cut about 8 inches of tail, and put it through a yarn needle and thread it through the remaining stitches twice and weave it in on the inside. If it’s 4 stitches remaining, graft them with Kitchener Stitch for a nice, smooth, unbroken finish with an 8 inch long tail.
